Robbie Wood’s legendary 10’6” Gordon Woods Rhino Chaser has made its triumphant return to its rightful spot above the main bar, perched opposite Robbie’s stomping ground — Merewether Beach.
Robbie Woods is the only Founder, Open Club Champion, President, Life Member and Hall of Fame Member of the Merewether Surfboard Club. He was the ultimate charger in Newcastle during the ’50s and ’60s, and the club’s success is a testament to his impact. Just check out the iconic shot of Robbie and Warren Chipchase tackling the Catho Bombie in ’63 — Robbie riding this very board, taking on waves like the legend he is.
The idea for the Merewether Surfboard Club was brewed over a casual meeting at Robbie Wood’s house in early 1964. That meeting sparked the idea, leading to more formal get-togethers with local surfers who were all in for the ride.
Robbie, the entrepreneur he was, offered to source club jackets. When orange and black weren’t on the menu, he made the call to go with blue instead. Nobody much disagreed with Robbie in those days, so ever since then the club has been proud to bleed black and blue.
Cheers to the Woods family for so generously loaning the board for us to display.
